Namely… expose the background first, then the foreground.
Not like this:
(background too bright)… but like this!
Look at the background. That is what I exposed for using Aperture and Shutter and ISO,. Then I worried about the foreground (flash/TTL).
If you do not know this technique, now is the time to learn.
And notice the difference in composition. A little tilt goes a long way.
