  1. That’s right, Ron, spot on. Obviously I accidentally moved the shutter to a speed that exceeds the flash sync speed of 1/250th sec. So the curtain isn’t all the way open when the flash goes.

    When using Pocketwizards you lose a few more ms, so you use 1/125th sec just in case. Which at f/5.6 and low ISO leads to ambient going away, as you see.

  2. I suppose there’s something to be said for electronic “shutters” that don’t have a sync speed limit. (I’m always a bit amazed how my 10-year-old Olympus can sync perfectly at 1/1000, while every modern SLR I’ve tried tops out at 1/250 or worse.)

  3. I had that happen to me not too long ago. Luckly I clued in right away to what it was, having done it before by accident.
