Tech Note: In a bright room like that, straight flash (aimed forward) is an option, but as fill – meaning I expose just under for the ambient light and Flash Exposure Compensation is set to -2 stops.

  1. Is that a normal Flash exposure compensation for fill flash? Or is this something that needs to be tested for each situation? I’m using Nikon if that makes a difference.

  2. Minus two is pretty normal for fill flash. But keep two things in mind:

    1. Canon tends to look at ambient light and automatically switch to fill flash when ambient is high

    2. Nikon reduces flash with exposure compensation.

Because of that, when using TTL you need to test your values.
